Botanical Profile

Goat's rue is a perennial Fabaceae plant with a long European history of medicinal and practical use.

Galega officinalis L. forms upright branched stems, imparipinnate leaves and violet to bluish-lilac papilionaceous flowers in loose racemes. The species originates from southern and southeastern Europe and western Asia and grows on fresh to moist soils, along banks, ditches and meadows. As a legume, it forms root nodules with nitrogen-fixing bacteria. Historically, it was regarded as a medicinal plant and, for a time, as a forage plant.

Phytochemistry

Characteristic constituents are guanidine derivatives, especially galegine. The plant also contains flavonoids, saponins, tannins, phenolic acids and other secondary metabolites. The guanidine fraction gives Galega officinalis a special position within the Fabaceae and is significant in the history of science. Modern analytics characterises these constituents chromatographically and by mass spectrometry.

Traditional Uses

Goat's rue has been mentioned in European herbals since the Middle Ages. The plant was cultivated in medicinal gardens and described in various regional traditions. The name Galega is frequently associated with its historical use as a forage plant. Pharmacognostic standard works list Galegae herba as a traditional medicinal plant.

Current Research

Research focuses on galegine, related guanidine compounds, flavonoids, saponins, nitrogen fixation, cultivation, ecological properties and the plant's scientific-historical role in natural-product chemistry.
