Botanical Profile

European goldenrod is the native European representative of the genus Solidago and a classical medicinal plant.

Solidago virgaurea L. is a perennial plant with upright stems, lanceolate to ovate leaves and golden-yellow flower heads arranged in narrow inflorescences. The species is distributed in Europe and parts of Asia and grows in meadows, heaths, forest margins, mountain grasslands and rocky habitats. Unlike North American goldenrod species, it does not form large arching panicles. Pharmacognostically, Solidaginis virgaureae herba is used.

Phytochemistry

European goldenrod contains flavonoids such as rutin, quercetin, kaempferol and isorhamnetin derivatives, triterpene saponins, phenolic acids such as chlorogenic acid, tannins and small amounts of essential-oil constituents. The combination of flavonoids and saponins shapes the pharmacognostic profile. Species-specific constituent patterns support differentiation from introduced North American Solidago species.

Traditional Uses

Goldenrod has been mentioned in European herbals since the Middle Ages. It was present in monastic gardens, folk medicine and later pharmacopoeias. EMA/HMPC, ESCOP, WHO and the European Pharmacopoeia list Solidaginis virgaureae herba as a documented drug. Ecologically, it is an important late-summer and autumn nectar source.

Current Research

Research investigates flavonoid profiles, saponins, phenolic acids, species differentiation, chemotaxonomy, genetic diversity, adaptation to altitude and differences from Solidago canadensis and Solidago gigantea.
