Botanical Profile
The large-leaved lime is a traditional European lime tree. Its flowers are treated together with those of the small-leaved lime in monographs as Tiliae flos.
Tilia platyphyllos Scop. is a large-leaved deciduous tree with fragrant inflorescences. Botanically it can be distinguished from Tilia cordata; in monograph literature, however, both species and their mixtures are considered together.
Phytochemistry
Phytochemically, the flowers largely correspond to the lime-flower profile, with flavonoids, mucilage, phenolic acids, tannins and small amounts of essential oil.
Traditional Uses
The EMA/HMPC monograph on Tilia cordata, Tilia platyphyllos, Tilia × vulgaris or their mixtures, flos describes traditional-use contexts for symptoms of the common cold and mild nervous tension.
Current Research
Modern research investigates flavonoids, mucilage fractions, phenolic compounds and floral aroma. These statements are to be understood as botanical-scientific context.
